2. Check the MOT record for free

Enter the registration at the official GOV.UK MOT history service. Compare the mileage recorded at each test with service entries and the seller’s advert. An MOT is a roadworthiness test, not an oil-service record. A reading discrepancy needs an explanation; a consistent set of readings is not proof that every reading is correct.

3. Match the VIN before comparing reports

A VIN is a 17-character vehicle identifier. Compare it on the car and its documents with the VIN used for any service-history request. UK registration is convenient for the public MOT lookup, while the VIN helps identify the exact car behind manufacturer-related records. Do not rely on a report for a similar model or an old registration without confirming the match.

4. Read the entries, not just the headline
